Social media, more than the newest hype?

There are still those that are not convinced that social media have a real chance of existence, who still perceive Facebook and twitter as the next hype. Still these are also the ones that without questioning use Youtube as their number one search engine for music and funny video’s. Social media is all around us. We use it and cant imagine our lives without it anymore. So how much of a fad is it really? Or is the world around us (society to be more specific) changing and is social media just part of that revolution.

Stop arguing, accept it; the world of our children is changing

Yesterday, when trying to explain  the concept of generation gap to my kids, I realized once again that their view of the world and their expectations are already tuned in into new possibilities and innovations. On finding out that my friend didn’t have internet until age 16, simply because it didn’t exist, my daughter exclaimed; ” how did you survive so long without it” and my son was seriously concerned and asked how he would spent his time and entertain himself. This goes for the mobile phone as well. The thought that I didn’t have one until I was in my twenties was shocking. The least of all because of how I would tell the time, or set an alarm, or get in touch with friends.

Eday09, sketching keynote speakers

Last thursday I attended Eday09, Emerce day 2009, in ‘De van Nelle fabriek’ in Rotterdam. A day of inspiring speakers and workshops. A good mix of people and speakers. The sidetrakcs where small and intimite and offered a variety good learnings. Since I was there to sketch for Dutchcowgirls, I limited sketching to the keynote speakers at the mainstage.

Visual presentation; lokloq's new mobile recruitement application

For the launch of the new white labelled mobile recruitement application by lokloq, I was asked to make a presentation with visuals that would tell their story. The making of… a sketchnote, wilg's story

Posted by wilgengebroed On May - 11 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

3447127111 b18ef1dc9f The making of... a sketchnote, wilg's story How do you make them.. ? Why do you make them..? How long does it take..? Many have approached me to aks these questions. So I have decided to write a post to try and explain. Sketchnotes, the making of..

The why is easy, my notes have always been in sketches, quotes and nodes to make connections or draw relations. It makes me remember things more easy. When it proofed helpful to others I simple gave some more attention to them so that others would be able to read them as well.

The how takes a bit more explaining. They are not just sketches, neither just notes. A sketchnote takes me as long as the speaker is talking. I listen to the story and make it my own. My interpretation and all what I pick up while listening will appear on paper.. In every sketchnote I usually pick up on insights or relations. I sometimes even relate outside the speakers story, just because this is how my mind works. In a way every sketchnote is my version of a blogpost of a presentation all wrapped up in one drawing.

I enjoy making sketchnotes when passionate speakers speak about things I relate to. So web and social media is my favorite subject. I relate and understand this. So I can make connections and insights. Sketching The Wext Web ‘09 in Amsterdam was a great thing to do. And judging on Boris’s Flickr stats (where my skethcnotes where posted) -as well as my own- other enjoyed them too! I’ll just keep on sketchnoting, hoping others will keep enjoying them. So that one day, I’ll be the official sketchnoter for Leweb in Paris. Or other big influential conferences. Making me a very happy sketching @wilg!
